Beneath the Lid: Mastering Box Linings

When:
Saturday 27'th June 2026
Where:
Ians Place
Following recent association sessions on enhancing furniture and box exteriors with book-matched veneers and decorative features, this specialized workshop addresses a frequent member question: how to ensure the inside of a handmade box matches the high-quality finish of the outside. To bridge this gap, the Fine Woodwork Association is launching its very first hands-on session dedicated exclusively to the craft of interior lining.
What You Will Learn
Led by experienced instructor Harry, this comprehensive session is designed to take the guesswork out of working with textiles and adhesives. The curriculum covers both the theory and practical application of fine linings:
Material Selection: Understand the wide range of lining materials available to woodworkers, including their unique physical properties, thickness considerations, and how to select the perfect color contrast for your timber.
Substrates and Backing: Learn how to properly use card and other backing materials to create crisp, sharp edges that fit perfectly into a box cavity without bunching or wrinkling.
Adhesive Mastery: Explore the specific glues and application techniques required to permanently bond fabrics to wood or card without the adhesive bleeding through and ruining the textile's surface.
Hands-On Project Details
This is a fully practical, interactive workshop. Rather than just watching a demonstration, every participant will actively build their skills on a premium project. All specialist tools and workshop materials will be provided on the day. Each attendee will work directly with a beautiful, solid Jarrah box and premium micro-fibre lining, practicing the cuts, folds, and gluing techniques in real time. By the conclusion of the session, you will leave with a completely finished, professionally lined Jarrah box to take home.
Class Sizes and Hospitality
To guarantee the highest standard of instruction, the workshop is structured as a small-group micro-class with space for just six participants. This intimate environment ensures that everyone receives ample one-on-one guidance, personalized troubleshooting, and tailored feedback from Harry throughout the day. While the association will gladly provide morning and afternoon tea, attendees are asked to bring their own lunch and a personal travel cup for refreshments.
