Decorative Effects Workshop

Several of our members travelled to Japan last year to learn to apply decorative effects to their projects. This course takes the lessons learned on that trip and introduces them to students.

Over this two-day workshop at the Forrest Heritage Centre in Dwellingup, we will be teaching you how to apply gold leaf and “Maki-e” which is the application of mica powders to a lacquered surface.

There will be sufficient samples for you all to practice on, before selecting your own pattern and applying it to a pre-prepared Jarrah box and a set of coasters.

We will travel to Dwellingup on Friday afternoon and get settled in before dinner. The course begins in earnest on Saturday morning after breakfast. The morning will start with a general explanation of the embellishments we will be covering and some lessons we have learnt while planning this course (so you don't have to). Gold leaf will be the first technique we cover, you will have time to practice before lunch. After lunch it will be time to learn Maki-e. The rest of the day will be about honing your new skills and decorating a set of coasters.

On Sunday morning we will show you how to inlay pearl dots on the lid of your box. Then it will be time to work on the final design for your box. By the end of the day everyone should have completed a set of coasters and the lid of their box.
