March 2026 meeting - Adventures in Japan

When:

10 March 2026

19:00 - 21:00

Last year, six of our members headed off on an unforgettable journey to Japan to learn traditional wood embellishment techniques from some of the country’s most respected master craftspeople. Their travels took them through the vibrant streets of Tokyo, the historic charm of Kyoto, the port city of Kobe, and other renowned craft centres, where they immersed themselves in the intricate arts of kimekome, Maki-e, and gold leaf embellishment.

Along the way, they were welcomed into the workshops of master artisans including Kenji Miyata and Watanabe Akiri, gaining rare, hands-on insights into techniques passed down through generations.

Now they’re back home and ready to share their stories with our community — the places they explored, the craftspeople they met, the skills they developed, and their exciting plans for a return visit.

Come along to hear firsthand about this inspiring cultural exchange, connect with fellow makers, and discover how these traditional techniques can enrich our own creative practice here in Australia. Everyone is welcome — bring a friend and be part of the conversation!

A few housekeeping notes:

Please wear closed-toe shoes, bring your own cup, sign in on arrival, let us know if you’d prefer not to be photographed, and take care while moving around the venue.

Disclaimer: We make every effort to ensure that the meeting and course details are published correctly; however, since our presenters and instructors are volunteering their time and skills there may be last minute changes to the programme for an event or course.
