Scrapers, Spokeshaves & Hand Planes

Monthly Meeting

8 June 2025

Monthly Meeting

The meeting featured a dynamic round-robin format with four expert-led stations. Presenters included Kevin Luff on spokeshaves, Derek Cohen and Stan Keen on hand planes, and Ian Houghton on scrapers. Each session offered hands-on demonstrations and practical advice, with topics ranging from tool sharpening and maintenance to nuanced techniques for achieving fine woodworking finishes. The event emphasized the value of traditional tools, personal craftsmanship, and the importance of understanding grain direction and tool setup. Upcoming events include a site visit to the Perth Artifactory and the “Out of the Woods” exhibition in November.

Each speaker brought a unique style and depth of knowledge. Ian Houghton’s session on scrapers was informal and rich with practical tips, while Derek Cohen delivered a more technical presentation on planes, focusing on blade angles and chip breaker techniques. Kevin Luff highlighted the versatility and affordability of spokeshaves, encouraging experimentation regardless of tool cost. Stan Keen rounded out the evening with a passionate and humorous talk on hand planes, emphasizing body positioning, sharpening techniques, and the joy of using vintage tools. The evening was both educational and engaging, reinforcing our commitment to skill-sharing and community learning.
