Workshop
We recently held our first intermediate veneering workshop at Ian Houghton’s workshop in Mt Lawley, with six enthusiastic participants of varying experience levels. Ian began by sharing the veneering techniques he currently uses in his own projects, including how to stain veneers and choose the best methods for achieving high-quality results. He introduced the concept of stacking veneer layers into a “package” using straw board on the top and bottom, experimenting with contrasting colours and grain directions to explore how light interacts with the finished surface.
Participants then created three shapes, taped their veneer packages, and experimented with different cutting methods—though the scroll saws quickly became the tools of choice. After each cut, the packages were re-taped to minimize the kerf from the saw blade. The goal was to produce multiple layers of veneer patterns using various techniques, highlighting how colour and grain choices dramatically affect the final appearance. Everyone left with a deeper understanding of how thoughtful design decisions can elevate the art of veneer inlay.
