Ebonisto Workshop Visit

Rajeev Fernando

6 May 2023

Monthly Meeting

Despite the cold and wet weather in May, 26 of our members made the trip to Ebonisto’s Cabinet Works in Myaree, where we were warmly welcomed by Rajeev. He gave us a fascinating tour of his workshop, showcasing a range of projects in progress—including a beautifully carved altar with stained glass inserts for a Catholic church and a timber handrail for an aged care facility. The handrail, with its seamless 90-degree timber bends, sparked plenty of questions. Rajeev explained the intricate process involving CNC machining, edge rounding, and precise sectioning to achieve a consistent and polished finish.

After a welcome tea and coffee break (thanks to Peter!), Rajeev introduced us to his impressive collection of Japanese woodworking tools available through Ebonisto’s. From Shinto saw rasps to bamboo drills and over nine types of saws, there was something for everyone to try—and many of us didn’t leave empty-handed! The hands-on demonstrations and tool testing made for a fun and informative afternoon. A big thank you to Rajeev for his time and hospitality. For those keen to explore more or pick up a new tool, you can visit his website at www.ebonisto.com.au. Now that we know where to find him, we’re sure to be back!
