Out of the Woods 2025
The Out of the Woods Exhibition was held over the weekend of the 7th and 8th of November at the Pattern Workshop which is part of the heritage listed Midland Railway Workshops. The Exhibition is presented by the Fine Woodwork Association of Western Australia, with support from our friends at the City of Swan, the Fremantle Men's Shed, the Handtool Preservation Society, and the Country Women's Association.
The Pattern Workshop is a unique setting for the Exhibition because it contains machines, tools, and patterns used to create parts for WA Railway locomotives and rolling stock. We held our first Exhibition there in 2025, and this year there were more than 350 visitors stepping through the front door to view the Exhibition. This is more visitors than we had last year thanks to the behind the scenes work by many volunteers leading up to the event.
Participation in the Exhibition is open to the public and there were entries from high school students, hobbyists, enthusiasts, and professionals. This year there were 82 entries submitted by 52 exhibitors in nine different categories including Adult Furniture, Boxes, Carving, Year 12 Furniture, Year 11 Furniture, and Embellished Wood Turning. The standard of the entries was exceptional, especially the entries submitted by school students.
The Exhibition also contains a competition within each category for pieces that have not been previously exhibited. A panel of judges selected first, second, and third prize in each category. Visitors were asked to vote for their favorite piece to decide the Peoples Choice award.
