Local Woodworkers Set to Master Ancient Japanese Craft in Dwellingup
DWELLINGUP – Local craft enthusiasts are in for a treat this July, with the announcement of a unique, hands-on woodworking weekend hosted by the FWWA and Forrest Discovery Centre.
The upcoming Kumiko Box Making Workshop will give a small group of makers the rare opportunity to learn Kumiko — a traditional Japanese technique where intricate geometric timber patterns are assembled without a single nail or drop of glue.
Whether you are a seasoned woodworker or a complete beginner looking to try your hand at a rewarding new hobby, the workshop promises a social, entertaining, and highly educational weekend away.
What’s on the Bench?
Participants will spend the weekend crafting a gorgeous Jarrah box featuring mitred joints and contrasting keys (splines). The piece de résistance will be a stunning Izutsu-Tsugi pattern Kumiko insert for the lid.
To ensure everyone walks away with a wealth of knowledge, instructors will be teaching the traditional method of using a "story stick" to precisely lay out the timber patterns. As a bonus, anyone who flies through the main project will also get to assemble a beautiful Kakuasa pattern Kumiko trivet to take home.
A Country Getaway Included
It isn't all hard work over the saw benches, though. The event is designed as a relaxing social getaway, taking place at the Dwellingup Forest Discovery Centre Workshop from Friday, 24th July to Sunday, 26th July 2026.
The $450 course fee is a bit of a bargain, completely covering:
All workshop materials and tuition.
Two nights' accommodation at the cosy Jarrah Forest Lodge.
All meals—including a hearty bacon and egg breakfast cooked by resident short-order chef, Kevin.
After checking in on the Friday afternoon, participants can look forward to unwinding by a warm fire before a big weekend of creating.
Secure Your Spot
With five experienced instructors — Allan, Life members Ian and Kevin, Harry, and Carolyn — on hand to guide the class, students will receive an incredible amount of one-on-one mentorship.
Because of this high level of personalised teaching, places are strictly limited to just six participants.
These popular weekends always fill up fast, so if you want to snag a spot, you'll need to send an email to the organisers today to reserve your place.
